La corteza motora primaria juega un papel esencial en la planificación y ejecución de los movimientos.
Se han observado alteraciones en la función de M1 en estudios con personas que padecen dolor crónico.
Numerosas investigaciones han demostrado que modificar la actividad de la corteza motora primaria (M1) produce efectos analgésicos en pacientes con dolor neuropático y con fibromialgia.
